a few things before you join me

a note from mel

Before you join me I’ve got a few things worth keeping in mind. Nothing you need to overthink, just a little advice to help you get the most out of the experience.

This is where you’ll find what’s coming up with Roaming Vaquera Photography. Each offering is available for a limited time with new dates and experiences added throughout the year.

COME READY TO SETTLE IN

Think about where we’ll be and what you’ll feel comfortable spending time in. I’ll share more specific guidance before your session, especially if weather or location plays a part.

DRESS FOR THE DAY

We’ll have a plan going in, but we don’t need to follow it down to the minute. Some of the best parts of these experiences happen when we give the day a little room to take its own shape.

LEAVE A LITTLE ROOM FOR THE UNPLANNED

You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out. Whether you’re coming to learn or stepping in front of my camera, I want this to feel like something you get to enjoy, not something you need to get right.

DON’T OVERTHINK IT

Fall minis

September 2025

Melanie

a little about this day...

Last year’s fall minis were spent on a beautiful, warm fall evening in the pasture, with a little creek tucked into the landscape and wide-open skies stretching behind us. We were lucky enough to finish the evening beneath the most beautiful cotton-candy skies.
So many families came out to capture a few updated photos and simply pause this chapter of their lives for a little while. Kids ran and played in their adorable outfits, families laughed, cuddled and soaked up the evening together - the kind of everyday moments that pass by far too quickly. These sessions were a reminder that it doesn’t have to be a big occasion to be worth documenting. Sometimes, it’s just about remembering your family exactly as they are right now. Taking a few minutes in a fall mini to capture exactly that.

Roaming Vaqueras first set of Winter Minis 2023

November 2023

Melanie

a little about this day...

One of my favourite years of Christmas minis yet was my first ever set in 2023 and this setup is making a comeback for 2026! A horse trailer, cowhide backdrop, Christmas trees, mini ponies, fresh winter snow, coffee and treats… what more could you ask for? Families joined me for a cozy winter afternoon, visiting with one another between sessions and soaking up all the Christmas magic. There were so many laughs, little snuggles with the ponies, and sweet moments with their families while taking in the beauty of a snowy winter day. These minis were about more than just updated Christmas photos - they were about slowing down, enjoying the season and creating memories that bring you right back to this little chapter of life. Taking a moment to document your family and slow down to visit with others even if just for a little while.

Christmas Minis 2025

November 2024

Melanie

a little about this day...

Christmas minis in 2025 were truly a winter adventure. We woke up to more than three feet of snow the morning of, so trails had to be dug through the deep snow just to reach our little photo location. Somehow, it made the whole day even more magical - a blanket of fresh, untouched white snow became the backdrop for this year’s Christmas memories. Families had the choice of visiting with the mini ponies or meeting my friend’s sweet, halter-trained bottle calf, dressed up in a festive red Christmas halter. We set out straw bales for families to sit on and kept a campfire burning nearby to help everyone stay warm while we captured their photos. There were plenty of laughs, snuggles, and little moments in between, all while enjoying a true snowy Alberta Christmas day. These minis were a little bit of an adventure, a lot of fun and the perfect reminder that sometimes the most memorable photos come from simply embracing whatever the day brings.

Let’s Work Through It Together

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORSHIP

As a self-taught photographer, I know how valuable it can be to learn from someone who has already worked through the questions you’re facing. I’ve invested in workshops and one-on-one education throughout my own career and I still believe there’s always something new to learn.

My mentorship sessions give us the chance to focus on what would be most helpful to you right now. Maybe you’re still getting comfortable with your camera or want another set of eyes on your editing. You might be trying to figure out how to show up online or you want to feel more confident photographing livestock. We’ll start with where you’re at and shape our time around what you want help with.

I’ll guide you through the process and share what I’ve learned from building Roaming Vaquera, while giving you plenty of room to ask questions along the way.
